Small Group Training is the newest fitness offering from Campus Recreation. Join personal trainers or small group fitness coaches and 4-8 fellow participants in a 5-7 week program designed to challenge, and gradually advance your fitness skills in a particular area of training. Gather 4-8 friends and get started today!
Enjoy more personalized instruction, with a more intimate, goal-oriented, small-group. Master measurable skills and move through basic, intermediate and advanced classes as you progress. Participants will be required to complete an introductory orientation course before registering for a more advanced small-group training.
Small Group Training offers a unique opportunity to explore an emerging dimension of fitness by combining Personal Training with Group Fitness. This is a great option for those that are looking for an effective, high quality workout that is focused on skill development, motivation and enhanced fitness.
Small Group Training focuses on specialized instruction using specific equipment in a progressive exercise program. This program is designed with the intention of accommodating participants who can commit to regularly attending class.
Participants are NOT required to complete a Comprehensive Fitness Appraisal to participate, however, will be required to fill out pre-participation forms. Expect 4 to 8 participants per session.
How Do I Know Which Small Group Training Class Is Right For Me?
While we work hard to accommodate all fitness levels in our specialty classes, NOT all Small Group Training (SGF) formats are recommended for everyone. Please read the Participant Fitness Level descriptions below to determine what level you are currently at. Once completed, please ensure the SGF that you would like to register for is recommended for your fitness level.
Level 1: You are new to exercise, especially strength training. You struggle performing basic movements such as squats, lunges and push-ups with proper form or you’re not sure what those exercises even are. You used to exercise, but have some injuries and haven’t worked out since you completed rehabilitation with a clinician. You are very careful with your joint-health and either don’t like, or try not to jump around a lot.
Level 2: You are familiar with basic movements such as squats, lunges and push-ups, and you are able to perform these movements with proper form occasionally, but not on a regular basis. You may also have some limitations due to previous injuries, but have since completed rehabilitation with a Physician and/or physical therapist and have already been exercising either on your own or with a trainer (generally greater than 4 months). You can perform moderate amounts of jumping and running.
Level 3: You can squat, lunge and complete push-ups with proper form on a regular basis. If you had an injury in the past, it’s fully rehabilitated and you have no exercise limitations. You can perform higher-intensity movements and ultimately want to be pushed to a higher level of fitness.
I know my Participant Fitness Level, now what?
If you categorize yourself as a Level 1 Fitness participant, please consider scheduling some personal training sessions before registering for small group training. The Fit Essentials Small Group option should be considered as well. If you fall into Levels 2 or 3, please check the class descriptions to see what classes are right for you.
It is recommended that individuals who are brand new to exercise, or who struggle with the most basic exercises, like squats, lunges and/or push-ups, work with a personal trainer one-on-one for at least 5 sessions to work on basic form and technique before starting a small group training program. Personal training provides the one-on-one attention you may need to build a foundation to perform basic exercises safely. Ultimately, your health and safety is our number one priority and we want to recommend the appropriate training program for you.
Our small group fitness coaches work hard to accommodate varying levels of fitness, however, small group classes are not appropriate for individuals who have injuries which require rehabilitation and should be supervised by a Physician and/or licensed physical therapist. Our trainers are not physical therapists and this is not a medically-supervised fitness facility.

Complete the interest form and we'll do our best to create a personalized class at a time that is convenient for you and your small group. We only need a minimum of four people (8 max) to customize your personal small group fitness training.
