Maintain constant surveillance of both active and passive users of the leisure pool
Recognize and respond effectively to emergencies when guarding the pool and pool deck
Coordinate emergency and evacuation procedures that include care for the injured, initiation of the emergency action plan, and notification of appropriate personnel and university and community authorities
Educate and enforce members on all leisure pool rules, policies, and procedures
Provide active surveillance when members are in the water and constant supervision of the aquatics area as a whole
Keep the facility a safe and clean environment by participating in a regular cleaning and pool maintenance schedule (sweeping pool deck, vacuuming the pool, scrubbing pool deck equipment, etc)
Perform hourly counts of users present on the pool deck
Assist with Campus Recreation and Aquatics program special events and rentals
Report any maintenance problems or safety hazards to the Aquatics professional staff

Create a safe and welcoming environment to maintain an atmosphere that cultivates long-term participation
Clean and maintain equipment and facilities on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis
Utilize When to Work to communicate work availability to supervisors and co-workers
Arrive promptly for shifts, dressed in provided uniforms, presenting a professional appearance and enthusiastic attitude (good posture, alert, attentive, courteous)
Have a thorough knowledge of all rules and regulations of the aquatics area and a willingness to enforce them
Acts an ambassador for Campus Recreation both at work and away
Ensure certifications are up to date, renewed in a timely matter, and communicated to Aquatics Professional Staff
General Schedule
This position will be scheduled to work 2-4 hour shifts Monday – Friday 9:00 am - 8:00 pm, Saturdays 11:00 am - 8:00 pm, and Sundays 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm. This position is available from March through October with limited hours available for work during the semester and holiday breaks. A minimum of 10 hours per week is required, with a maximum of 20 hours.
Job Requirements
Currently enrolled student of Auburn University
Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0
Must possess and maintain a current nationally recognized lifeguarding certification and Professional CPR/First Aid certification
Physical Requirements
Complete water skills testing before hire:
300 m swim (any stroke)
Retrieve a brick from a depth of 12 feet and tread water with brick for 90 seconds
Show successful active and passive removal rescues
Complete CPR scenario
Complete a 500 m swim bi-weekly
Physical condition to meet any emergency
Frequently required to stand, walk or swim
Preferred Qualifications
One year of experience lifeguarding at an aquatic center or beach
