Job Description

Essential Functions

  • Lead safe and effective group fitness classes adhering to the specific guidelines of the specialty certification held
  • Supervise participants during class workout watching for form breakdown, monitoring intensity, and providing feedback for safety and options for varying fitness levels
  • Connect with participants attending the class to maintain an atmosphere that cultivates long term participation
  • Educate fitness classes on basic fitness terminology, proper movement patterns, how to self-monitor intensity levels, the benefits of consistent exercise, and how to use specific equipment
  • Respond to emergency situations by following the Campus Rec EAP as well as CPR guidelines
  • Maintain a clean and neat space by putting away and organizing equipment in designated storage areas after class
  • Promote Group Fitness events through class announcements


Job Expectations

  • Prepares a polished and safe fitness class to present to participants which includes creating or selecting a pre-designed playlist of fitness music at the appropriate beats per minute and without vulgar lyrics, designing or memorizing a balanced and effective workout following the specific guidelines taught in the format certification, planning for all fitness levels by including levels of intensity for each movement/exercise taught, and practicing the workout to ensure a smooth and polished delivery.
  • Arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of class to check in participants and initiate room set up for class
  • Dress in provided uniforms, presenting a professional appearance and enthusiastic attitude
  • Start class on time and end with enough time to clean up and allow the next class to start on time
  • Provide a variety of class content for classes, keeping the format fresh by adding new material/content throughout the semester
  • Arrange for a sub when necessary and be willing to sub for others
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings
  • Attend professional development offerings to gain a deeper knowledge of biomechanics, exercise physiology, fitness trends and equipment usage, and presentation skills
  • Follow procedures and policies set forth in the employee manual, as well as all departmental and university policies
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of software used by Group Fitness:  Fusion for checking in class participants, When to Work for scheduling and substitutions, ICG Connect for Cycling classes, and any specific app used for fitness classes
  • Reads weekly newsletter to stay informed of Group Fitness announcements and important information
  • Communicate with professional staff in a timely manner
  • Maintain certification by either opting into a specialty monthly professional development service (fee-based per specialty certification) or by attending approved CEC workshops, conferences, trainings, etc.

 

General Schedule

This position will be scheduled to work 2 - 4 classes Monday – Thursday 5:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m., Fridays 5:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Saturdays 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Sundays 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. This position is available in Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters with limited hours available during semester and holiday breaks. A minimum of 5 hours per week is required, with a maximum of 10 hours.

Job Requirements

  • Currently enrolled student of Auburn University
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0
  • Must obtain and maintain a current CPR/First Aid/AED certification.
  • Must possess and maintain a current nationally recognised group fitness certification —general (ACE or AFAA) or specialty (YogaFit, Schwinn Cycling, Zumba, Barre Above, etc.)

Physical Requirements

  • Need to be in good physical condition to lead class
  • Able to lift and clean equipment and organize storage areas
